Flag Plaza Scout Center Celebrates 40 Years
Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh gathers with previous Scout Executives, including Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazucca as the 40th anniversary of Flag Plaza celebration begins.
On September 26, 2008 the council celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Flag Plaza Scout Center with a special ribbon cutting ceremony that was attended by a number of special guests and interested Scouters. Former Scout Executives Ron Moranville and Bob Mazucca joined with Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh to rededicate Flag Plaza Scout Center with a special ribbon cutting ceremony.
The guests enjoyed seeing the latest improvements to Flag Plaza including the pressure cleaning of the Indiana limestone walls, the newly resurfaced the parking lot, and the sprucing up of the inside of the building.
Scouters enjoyed a rare opportunity to view ten of Norman Rockwell’s Scouting paintings and ten of Joseph Csatari’s paintings that were on loan to the council for the 2008 Endowment Tour.
Flag Plaza Scout Center is the legacy gift of Chester Hamilton Lehman, a Pittsburgh industrialist who was actively involved in the council. On July 4, 1968, the former Allegheny Trails Council dedicated its new Scout Center and Flag Plaza. On November 1, 1983, Mrs. Vivian Lehman’s estate provided an addition Flag Plaza Scout Center that includes the Atrium, the Bicentennial Room, the Pittsurgh Scout Shop, and a number of staff offices.
59TH ANNUAL EAGLE SCOUT RECOGNITION DINNER
To be held November 25, 2008 on the occasion of Pittsburgh’s 250th Anniversary Birthday!
Over 300 members of the Council’s 2008 Eagle Scout Class will be honored for achieving Scouting’s highest award.
This year’s recognition dinner is especially significant since it coincides with the historic night of November 25, 1758 when General John Forbes and British military leaders took possession of Fort Duquesne. As a result this night officially marks the 250th Anniversary for the beginnings of Fort Pitt and the place called “Pittsburgh.”
Over 750 Eagle Scouts, their Scoutmasters, sponsors, and special guests will help commemorate this event in the Pittsburgh Hilton … the very location where history was recorded at “The Forks of the Ohio” 250 years ago.
Ralph J. Martin, president and CEO of the Tribune-Review Publishing Company is chairman of the event, and J. David Thompson, executive vice president of The Bank of New York Mellon is chairman of the Table Sales Committee.
